Miner Lonmin (LMI.L) was the biggest riser at the close of trading, as it saw share price climb 8.5 per cent higher to 1,275p.

The mining and banking sectors were both boosted in a buoyant day for the FTSE 100 index, which opened for the first time after the Bank Holiday weekend in the UK.

Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS.L) rose 8 per cent to 23.64p, while Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY.L) added 7.8 per cent to its share price, finishing at 32.03p.

Elsewhere, engineer Weir Group (WEIR.L) increased by 7.4 per cent to 1,856p, and Vedanta Resources (VED.L) climbed 7.3 per cent higher to 1,337p.

Reckitt Benckiser (RB.L) was the heaviest faller at trading's close, however, share price fell just 0.3 per cent to 3,198p.

Supermarket chain Tesco (TSCO.L) and pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) both dropped 0.2 per cent to 364.8p and 1,286.5p, respectively.

Marks & Spencer (MKS.L) and security services company G4S (GFS.L) slipped 0.1 per cent to 309.4p and 259.9p, respectively.
