Smith & Nephew (SN.L) was the biggest riser this morning (at 1027) with share price rising 6 per cent to 632p.

The medical devices group rose early on as Deutsche Bank began coverage with a 'buy' recommendation.

Building supplies company Wolseley (WOS.L) saw its share price rise by 4.2 per cent to 1,590p, while technology company Smiths Group (SMIN.L) was up 3.6 per cent to 980p.

Engineer GKN (GKN.L) was up 3.3 per cent 202.8p, while Petrofac (PFC.L) 3.2 per cent to 1,339p.

Real estate investment trusts were among the biggest fallers this morning with British Land (BLND.L) leading the way.

British Land shed 2.3 per cent down to 531.5p, while Land Securities (LAND.L) fell 1.7 per cent to 716p and Hammerson (HMSO.L) dropped 1.1 per cent to 402p.

Asset manager Schroders was the other big faller this morning with both share classes dropping.

The voting share class (SDR.L) dropped 1.9 per cent to 1,453p, while the non-voting share class (SDRC.L) fell 1.8 per cent to 1,175p.
