The biggest riser at the end of play on Friday was microchip manufacturer Arm Holdings as share price increased by 6.1 per cent to 414.6p.

The firm was buoyed by renewed speculation that it could yet receive a takeover bid.

Burberry also rose strongly with share price climbing by 6 per cent to 1,002p. The luxury goods manufacturer has also been mooted as a potential takeover target.

Retail real estate firm Hammerson saw share price rise by 4.4 per cent after being upgraded  to buy status by Credit Suisse.

The biggest faller was miner Antofagasta, which saw share price slide by 2.5 per cent to 1,181p. The firm had earlier fallen on reports of a downgrade by UBS.

Randgold Resources fell by 1.1 per cent to 6,485p, while National Grid dropped 1 per cent to 543p.
