Whether we like it or not, the stock market is a hotbed of rumour and uncertainly. Me, I like it that way. If the investment business was totally predictable, governed only by tangible facts and numeric results, all the fun would go out of the game.

Computers would make the decisions and the grey suits in the City would get rich quickest. As it is, those of us who rely on keeping our ears to the ground and using our common sense and experience to sieve what we hear will usually win the race.

That said, in three decades of investing for a living I have not met an investor worth his salt who has never made a mistake.
