Blue Chip Round-up: Kazakhmys, Centrica, Wood Group
Rob Langston, 16 May 2011
Kazakh copper miner Kazahmys (KAZ.L) is to push forward with its plans for a secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
According to the mining company, the secondary listing will provide it with 'an additional channel' to raise money.
The listing is planned to provide wider access for more retail and institutional investors and raise its profile in China and Asia.
Centrica (CNA.L) subsidiary British Gas is set to acquire central heating service provider PH Jones in a £30 million cash deal.
Betsy Bassis, managing director of British Gas community energy division, said the acquisition would 'accelerate' its growth strategy in the social housing market.
She said, 'Social housing is a strategically important market for British Gas.
'It not only represents 20 per cent of Britain’s housing stock, but it is also an early adopter of energy efficiency and renewable technologies.'
PH Jones’ social housing business currently provides central heating service and repair for around 250,000 properties and carries out over 8,000 central heating installations every year in the social housing sector.
The utility services business of PH Jones will be retained by the sellers.
Anglo American (AA.L) has announced the appointment of Philippe Mellier as chief executive of diamond company De Beers.
Mellier is currently president of Alstom Transport and will take up his new role in July.
Mellier said, 'De Beers is a unique company with a rich legacy that stretches through history and across an industry.'
Wood Group (WG.L) is to return almost £1.1 billion ($1.7 billion) to shareholders through a tender offer.
The move follows the acquisition of PSN and the sale of its well support division to GE Energy Manufacturing, earlier this year.
The tender offer will be extended to 173.6 million ordinary share, or around 32.1 per cent of the ordinary issued share capital at a price range of 605p to 625p.
Allister Langlands, chief executive of Wood Group, said, 'Following the return of cash, our balance sheet will continue to provide a strong platform for growth.'
